Video: A hardcore locavore family

CBS News ran this piece quite a few months ago about a Texas family that is committed to eating only from a 100 mile radius for one year.

I really admire what they are doing, but I realize that they are in Texas where the growing season is probably much longer than here in South Jersey. I like the comments at the end of the video that say it’s okay to do locavore half way and that sometimes potatoes shipped by tractor trailer 100 miles have more of a negative environmental impact than a whole train of potatoes being shipped 1000 miles.

The more I think and read and learn about local food vs non-local food, I realize there must be some balance. Don’t worry. Your South Jersey locavore isn’t going away, I’m just learning. I’ll have a lot more to say about it all in the upcoming weeks.
