Locavore odds and ends: Green festivals and possible book club

Diana from Natali Vineyards pours me a glass at one of last summer's wine festivals. Natali is hosting a fundraiser for The Cape May Zoo this weekend.
I’m toying with the idea of starting a monthly sustainable food book club – maybe next fall. It would center around books that talk about our food system (Animal, Vegetable, Miracle; The Omnivore’s Dilemma; Food Matters, etc.) as well as books that are accounts of people who have immersed themselves in the food culture of a region or other food experience (A Year in Provence; The Art of Eating In, etc.).
A writer friend of mine is in a book club that’s called Books, Bites and Booze, and if I do this, I’m totally going to steal that name but add Sustainable to the front of it. When we meet we’d discuss a book, share local or organic type dishes (but I won’t be the organic police about it) , and drink local or sustainable wines. Remember, I’m just toying with the idea right now, but if you would be interested in the club if I started it, let me know.
Here are some things that might interest you that are happening soon.
- Marlton Whole Foods is sponsoring a viewing of Food, Inc. at The Ritz Theater in Westmont on Thursday, April 29 at 7pm.
- Natali Vineyards in Cape May Courthouse will be hosting a fundraiser on Saturday the 24th to help the Cape May Zoo that suffered bad damage from the harsh weather this past winter.
- The Collingswood Green Festival is this Saturday. There will be opportunities to recycle the following items: Crocs brand shoes, Brita filters, sneakers, corks, cell phones, ink cartridges, rechargeable and button batteries, umbrellas, and bagged packing peanuts. Also for a donation to Knight Park Pavillion restoration, you can get your confidential documents shredded.
- Also, a reminder that the Cherry Hill Art Blooms Earth Day Festival is this Saturday, too.
- Save the Date – The High Street Grill in Mt. Holly will host the 2nd Annual Spring Craft Beer Festival on May 15th.
- Springdale Farms is having an open house this weekend. There will be free tastings of pies, cheese and wines. Saturday they will be tasting wines from Four Sisters Winery. Sunday, they will be tasting wines from Velanzano. Rugers University Mater Gardeners will be available for consulation from 10-4 on both days. There will also be local asparagus and spinach for sale and much more.
- My column this week for the Celebrate Green blog has me celebrating what’s in season at the moment. There may not be a huge variety in season yet, but there’s lots you can do with what is.
- The Courier Post has a piece on some of our regions Farm Markets and Farmers Markets. Check it out.
Enjoy your weekend!

Awesome list – great for starting this weekend off right!
thanks Holly.
Robin; I’d love to be a part of your book club! Let me know if and when…
Tracey – I had a hunch you’d be interested. I have another person interested, too. The more I think about it, the more I really want to do it.
