Locavore odds and ends: Ready, set, shop at the farmers markets!

2010 April 30

Last year's opening day at The Collingswood Farmers Market was a bit dreary, but tomorrow promises to be beautiful.

It’s ridiculous how excited I am about the opening of the Collingswood Farmers Market tomorrow. It’s going to be such a beautiful day, too. Perfect weather. Who else will be there tomorrow morning.

There are other things besides the Collingswood Farmers Market happening, though. Here are some I thought might interest you.

  • The Haddonfield Farmers Market also opens tomorrow morning.
  • The West Windsor Farmers Market in Mercer County begins tomorrow, too, if your closer to that area.
  • And, if you’re in Philadelphia on Sunday, the Headhouse  Farmers Market returns for the season.
  • After you’ve shopped at the farmers market tomorrow, why not join the thousands of people all over the world that will be participating in International Sunflower Guerrilla Gardening Day. It will be my third year participating.
  • Terhune Orchards Kite Day - Join the folks at Terhune Orchards for a high-flying weekend of fun. Bring your own kite, choose a ready-made one from the wide selection in the store, or better yet, make a “guaranteed to fly” kite on site.  At this free festival, families can tour the orchards and fields riding in a tractor-drawn farm wagon, walk along the farm trail, ride ponies through the apple orchards. Enjoy country music and entertainment from noon-4 each day, with Mountain Heritage playing favorites on Saturday and Michael’s Cajun Aces on Sunday.  Children (and adults!) will love the barnyard games and activities, or watching the sheep being shorn on Sunday.  And, of course, there will be lots of good country food: Terhune Orchards’ famous apples, cider, donuts, pies, country soup, hot dogs, fresh and grilled asparagus and chicken, salads, soup and more. Call 609-924-2310 or visit www.terhuneorchards.com for more information. Terhune Orchards, 30 Cold Soil Road, Princeton. (info courtesy of Edible Jersey).
  • City Paper’s Meal Ticket blog mentions a Philly restaurant, Tweed,  set to open in June where the “food will skew farm-fresh, organic and local.” I’ll have to check it out when it opens.
  • Lisa Howard-Fusco had the opportunity to go to the Outer Coastal Wine Symposium and gives us the run down about what she learned about New Jersey wines over at John and Lisa are Eating in South Jersey.
  • Philly.com has an interesting piece on students at Williamstown that are “improving drainage and providing wildlife habitats at the sprawling campus, too.” The kids are learning about water quality, water conservation, and the environment in the best way they can – hands on.

That’s it for this weekend. I’m off to work in the garden.

Hi I created a publicly editable google map for Mercer County Farm direct food, the goal is to include as many roadside stands etc as possible, not just the obvious ones that the state lists.

    http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=28+Murray+Pl,+Princeton,+Mercer,+New+Jersey+08540&msa=0&msid=101204534607589563246.00048c52194676d877139&ll=40.197652,-74.884636&spn=0.967113,1.766052&z=9

I created one for Hunterdon County last year (we just moved) and it would be awesome if there was a series of such linked maps for all of Jersey.

    thanks!
