Locavore odds and ends: Did you know you can eat radish leaves?
2010 June 4
The garden is coming along nicely, isn’t it? The bare spot you see is where I pulled out the remainder of the radishes. I’m not trying to figure out what I can put in there at this late date. I may move some pepper plants that I’ve got out front to the spot because I’m not sure they are getting enough sun where they are. But, if you have any great ideas about what I can plant right now, let me know in the comments.
Here’s what’s going on.
- The Collingswood Farmers Market will have a demonstration tomorrow by one of this season’s Hell’s Kitchen contestant – local Siobhan Allgood. She’ll be demonstrating “A Taste of Baja” using Jersey ingredients. Also, cherries will make their first appearance for the season at the market.
- Opening this week will be the Bordentown City Community Farmers Market, The Point Pleasant Beach Farmers Market, The Toms River Farmers Market, and the Waretown Farmers Market. Exact dates and times can be found here.
- Those radishes that I pulled out of my garden went to double use. I used the green tops of the radishes to make surprisingly delicious Radish Top Soup. I’ve got a photo and the recipe over at Celebrate Green this week.
- Philly Beer Week starts today, and there are events on both sides of the river. Many of the bars and restaurants along Haddon Avenue in Haddon Township will be participating. It’s being called Haddon Pub Fest, and there will be special events, tomorrow June 5.
- Speaking of Philly Beer Week, Philly.com talks about the irony of the event. The bigger the event gets, the less the focus is on local beers. The folks at Philly.com, however, took on the task of taste testing the regions best beers. It’s worth a read.
- Sharrott Winery will hold its annual Spring Blues Festival this Saturday and Sunday from noon-6pm.
- Looking for something to do with those end of the season strawberries that might be a bit battered and bruised. They’d probably make fabulous Strawberry Infused Vodka. One of our readers, Bill, has a recipe on his blog Light Fare.
- Over on A Little Greener Every Day, I’m giving away two copies of the BBC Earth film Life. Pop on over there, make a comment, and you might be the winner.
- Finally, I want to share a blog with you this I recently discovered, East Coast Wineries. It covers wines all up and down the coast, and it does our NJ wineries justice.
