Help needed tomorrow, July 29, to pick corn that will be donated to those that need it
I love the idea of gleaning – going into fields that would otherwise be plowed under or the fruit would be allowed to rot and picking the food for those that need it. It’s actually a Biblical concept (here comes my Bachelors of Science in Bible knowledge). In Leviticus 23:24 God commands the Israelites “When you reap the harvest of your land, do not reap to the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. Leave them for the poor and the alien. I am the LORD your God.” The poor were allowed to pick some of the harvest for themselves. Call it an ancient social welfare program.
Gleaning is back in fashion, and there are lots of groups around the country that volunteer to pick in fields (or gather fruit from trees that were planted as ornamental trees but have perfectly good fruit on them).
I read on Jersey Bites today that there will be a picking session tomorrow morning (7/29/2010) at 6:30am at Peaceful Valley Orchards in Pittstown for about two hours.
Please respond to Colleen@americasgrowarow.org if you can help. Even if you only think you might make it, it would be a good idea to RSVP so that they can update the volunteers with any weather-related changes. If you need to contact the farm that day, please call Chip at 908-331-2962.
