Locavore odds and ends: Got tomatoes and jalapenos – must make salsa!

Believe it or not, I have weeded. I put cow manure in the section where the tomatoes are, and it seems that area very easily gets weeds now. I haven't touched the weeds in over and a week. Couple that with our much needed rains this week, and the weeds are pleniful.
I started a Facebook page for South Jersey Locavore yesterday, and I’m pleased that as of this moment 44 people have “liked” it so far. What’s even more surprising is that there are many people I’m unfamiliar with. To all my Facebook friends that have “liked” it because I pretty-pleased you, thank you. To the rest of you that discovered the site through Twitter or some other method, I’m thrilled to have you join the Facebook page. I hope that my in-house technical support (otherwise known as Brian) will get a button on this page soon that will take new readers to the Facebook page.
I got my first basketful of tomatoes from the garden yesterday – one slicing tomato and the rest Romas. I’ve also got some jalapenos from my niece Leah’s garden (along with some zucchini, lettuce and some really great zucchini bread she made) so I think I’ll be making salsa tomorrow. I’m going to try a very basic salsa recipe and also a little more involved Alton Brown one.
Here are a few things for the end of the week that I thought might interest you.
- Of course, Farm to Fork restaurant week starts on Sunday. I got an e-mail from Elements in Haddon Heights letting me know that they will have Kim Batton, a farmer from 1895 Organic Farm, at their dinner on Monday, July 19.
8th Annual Red, Wine & Blues Festival will be held at Tuckerton Seaport on July 24 from 2-8pm. Wine tastings from some of NJ’s wineries, live blues music, and a pie bake off contest are all part of the festivities. - A new farmers market is open in Evesham at the Wiley Church on Main Street on Tuesdays from 3:30-7pm. It will run through August 31.
- The Woodford Cedar Run Wildlife Refuge in Medford will host Berries and Other Edibles of the Pines this Sunday, the 18th, at 1:30. From their site: his time of year many of our edible berries ripen. Blueberries, huckleberries and others but do you know which is which? Join our naturalist to experience the many edibles of the pines.
- I highlighted 5 delicious looking recipes from squash blossoms over at MNN this week, and none of them are battered and fried.
Enjoy your weekend!
